It’s Art…yes, really…

This is one of those casual posts that just start when I get an angle on a particular image…it started with this:

DSCF7131

Two six-year-olds watching cartoons

Kirk and Lily watching cartoons, very old cartoons that, according to the date in credits, were made in 1946…both the girls love them (we have three DVDs worth of them, including a very un-PC take on Superman) and Kirk is pretty keen too…I’m not sure what the attraction is – it’s not that the girls don’t like contemporary cartoons: we put this on at their request because the morning cartoons on TV had degenerated into the daily infomercials, but they’d been happily following those; it’s also not because this is all there is to choose from on the cartoon front in our house: we have a good selection of animated movies. There is just something timeless about Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the rest of the crew that still appeals…it might not be modern art but it is definitely art…

DSCF7140

Needless to say…this was very much edible art…now you see it…

We had quite an artie weekend that weekend – the girls had a choice of sponge or chocolate cake for the mandatory ‘helping in the kitchen’ session (like that’s actually a choice!!) and helped Nana create this chocoholic’s dream, although they insisted on the right to do their own decorating…this is Elisabeth applying her finishing touches…

DSCF7133

…by Lily, aged 6…

Lily’s our creative girl and she left us this great little self-portrait with Elisabeth, Nana and Poppa…

I bet this is the last time that anyone gets between Terri and the last slice of lemon meringue pie

Does anyone really wonder why we call her ‘Scerri’ sometimes…?

Meanwhile, their youngest aunty was busy dealing to the zombie apocalypse in Rotovegas…a messy job but someone’s gotta do it…and it looks like she’s getting some real job satisfaction from it…

Me and my mate

Kirk is. like, my best mate…

One of the things we do together as mates is watched TV…Kirk really loves watching TV…he’s been a bit crook recently and so has been getting a bit more preferential treatment than usual. I’ve adjusted his diet and he seems to be a bit more perky in the last couple of days so hopefully, it’s just a passing bug and he will be up and about fully soon…

He is very attached to that bean bag which he actually stole off Deda. As soon as he is allowed inside he will race over to it and take possession of it…I may have to hide it as I am not sure that it is doing his back any favours. I’d much rather that he’d use the flat cushion you can see in some of the other shots…

This weekend we had a bit of a Professionals marathon but by the last DVD, Kirk was a bit over it…

DSCF7121

…but he perked right up when 60 Minutes came on with an item about elephants poaching in Africa – Kirk loves nature programmes and anything else that has lots of real (as opposed to canned) animal sounds…

DSCF7124

…after 60 Minutes, TV looked pretty sad so we put on a movie…it was my turn to pick so we watched Act of Valor – Kirk’s taste tends more towards Red Dog, Black Sheep, etc – Kirk was pretty into this…DSCF7126

…and got right into it when the dogs in the Mexican village – near the end of the movie – began to bark…

DSCF7128

While we were watching The Professionals, we caught this bit of unintentional humour. The plot involved an article on the other page but we spotted this about Rolf Harris’ ambition “…to star in a sexy film…” Possibly a bit regrettable today in the light of the ongoing arrests of entertainment stars from that era for a range of offences with young girls…

Photographers, artists, poets: show us SNEAKY.

DSCF6763

This is Deda, our two year old ‘Labweiller’. Deda is sneaky.

You may notice that the gate by her head is open. That doesn’t matter. Deda is sneaky.

She will find a way out anyway.

When we go away for a few hours, we have to either leave her inside or put her in a cage. If not, she will be sitting by the back door by the time we get to the gate.

Deda is sneaky. If she knows that we are watching her to see where she gets out, she will just sit on the grass and stare back at us. As soon we go though, she is back by the front door.

Did I mention that Deda is sneaky?

Are you as comfortable in front of a camera as behind one? Being written about, as well as writing?

Just because, I usually tend to the the do-er than the do-ee when it comes to writing and taking pictures. I’m not sure because this might be because I have a strongly sense of history and the need to record more than those things that are not earth-shattering historic events (those are good too!). Maybe it’s juts because I like writing and taking pictures. I’m not really uncomfortable on the other side of things; it just doesn’t happen that often…

Photographers, artists, poets: show us DISCOMFORT.

Discomfort is when…

Big Bad Kirk gets stuck 002

…when you are big enough and bad enough to jump up on the trailer but too wussy to jump down again…

Simon & Toby 003

…you realise that your new nephew’s happy gurgling means that he wants to bring something up – and it’s not a new subject for conversation…

Pepe On Guard 002

…you realise that not only are you being watched but that you have been watched and it’s unlikely that you will ever see that bone again…

Ruby's balloon May 04 - 1

…you realise that you are the only one that wants to play balloon games…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting | The Daily Post

My take on fleeting this week is of moments that you can never get back – they are there, then they are gone…fleeting…this week, just for a change I have used video instead of photos so I hope everyone is cool with this…

As you grow up, you can never quite replicate the thrill of being chased by a big blue ball…

In all fairness to the adults present, this was the chasee’s own idea…

That fleeting moment of victory…

Of course, it didn’t take Kirk the puppy long to grow up (currently weighs in at just over 50kg) whereas Pepe the spaniel stayed around 10kg…we had to sadly rehome Pepe in the end when he kept stealing toys from the big dogs…

And that fleeting moment of rapture when you realise that ISN’T an Airtrainer on approach…

Nothing quite like having a Merlin living nearby…

Weekly Photo Challenge: A Day in My Life | The Daily Post

Phoneography has been the theme of recent WordPress Weekly Photo Challenges and I find myself here even more limited than I normally might consider myself in some of the challenges…I’m a bit old school and just carry a phone to take and receive calls and send and receive the occasional text. On rare occasions, I might use it for an alarm but that’t it – no bells, whistles or other 21st Century technotomfooleery…

So when the challenge calls for photos to be taken with one’s phone, life becomes a little interesting, more so when we don’t have coverage for this particular carrier at home so I am not wont to carry the damn thing around with me when I am at home – which these days is most of the time. But we persevere and I guess that’s why they call them Challenges and not Easies…

So a day in my life, specifically last Sunday 31 March 2013…seen through a 1.3 megapixel lens…

DSC00020

Cuddles?

How the day started…we’ve gotten a bit slack and have been letting the big dogs sleep inside the last few weeks…a side effect of this is that one or both of us gets woken with a ‘kiss’ as soon as it is light…

DSC00022

The drought has been a worry for weeks now so it was good to wake up to moisture on the ground although the Island needs a lot more than this to do any real good…

DSC00021

…and looking at the eastern skies, the sun is already starting to burn through the cloud…

DSC00024

Breakfast is first up – well a bit of a clean up in the kitchen first – although it rained that night, old habits die hard and dish rinse water is poured by habit over plants by the front door, baby chestnut trees in this case…

DSC00023

I’d remembered to put some bread on the night before so here it is all fresh and yummy out of the bread-maker…

DSC00025

Because the girls are still producing big time we have oodles of eggs for scrambled eggs for breakfast, so scrambled eggs on fresh bread in the order for breakfast…but first just to pop out to the garden for some fresh parsley…

DSC00026

…and a reminder from the little (in relation to the ‘big dogs’) dog that I’m not the only one that needs feeding…

DSC00027

So that’s them happy for a while…

DSC00030

…and them that are exiled to the small coop while the effects of their worm dose wears off…

DSC00028

and then into the ‘big house’ to feed the general chook population…

DSC00029

…that’s these ladies…

DSC00036

And also to check that the new chook waterer thingie is working OK…DSC00037

…while remembering to remove their early morning labours…DSC00035

…before heading through the gate to the Chalet…guests from the weekend had already departed so time for a quick check inside – yup, tiptop, no problems plus a couple of Parrotdog beers left in the fridge – Thank you!!! With the benefit of hindsight, i guess that I could and should have taken some pics of what the Chalet is like inside but, to be honest, never thought about it – next, day in the life Challenge, I promise…DSC00032

And now off over the other side of the Chalet to check on Fred…he’e here somewhere…

DSC00031

Ah, he is – Fred is prone to wander and some day soon is in for a bit of a shock when the fences get reconnected to the grid…DSC00033

He does a pretty good job though – clearing away the blackberry – he could clear other stuff but he has become a little spoilt and particular about his diet…DSC00034

Pre-Fred, this was all blackberry…DSC00038

…and finally back to the office for work…well, actually, quite a few hours trying to work out how to get these photos off said high-tech phone (in 2006) and onto a computer…it is too old to support native USB connections and the interface software is to old and cranky to want to run on Win7, even after I went and searched and dug-out the old installation CD and connection cables – ah, yup the good old days of proprietary interfaces….NOT!

After many trials and tribulations and slings of outrageous fortune, I finally managed to achieve the mission using the common interface of Bluetooth between the phone and my trusty netbook…and this is where I spent the rest of my day working on various projects….

Weekly Photo Challenge: Kiss

For this week’s theme ‘kiss’, I was really hoping that I’d find some images that would fit some sort of theme like a galactic apocalypse kiss of death, or ‘…the asteroid only kissed the Earth’s atmosphere but that was enough to set in motion a bizarre chain of destruction...’ but nope, sorry, nothing like that at all so it’s back to the schmaltzy-waltzy stuff again…

Friends forever 001

Not quite a kiss but as close to it as these two foes ever got…

“Ewwww….!!”

sleep time

“I’ve got your back, sis…”

Raurimu snow 095

Go on...try it...I DARE you!!!

“Go on…try it…I DARE you!!!”

Kiss 001

Bloody cheeky natives…(…but which one?)

…but a parting thought (and it’s not even my own) on that galactic apocalypse kiss of death, ‘…the asteroid only kissed the Earth’s atmosphere but that was enough to set in motion a bizarre chain of destruction...’ thing…somewhere in Russia, as you read this…

Five Question Friday! 1/25/13

That I don’t always contribute to Five Question Friday is often not so much an issue of whether Mama M’s questions float my boat in any given week but is often more of me getting motivated…but certainly in this period of seeking employment and optimising the great weather for domestic projects, motivation is running high…so here goes…

1. Do you embrace or dread snow/cold weather days?

When it’s straight cold e.g. like this:

Image

…I don’t mind it too much…when it’s ongoing days of this:

Image…when all the heat is sucked from the ground and house, and it is just miserably cold and wet…nope, not much embracing going on then…

2. Which game show or reality show could you totally win?

As a spectator, I usually do OK inWho Wants To Be A Millionairebut would probably freeze and stutter if actually on the spot; reality shows just leave me cold so I think that’s a non-issue...

3. What is your preferred climate?

I like New Zealand, specifically where we are now on the Central Plateau where both winters and summers are comfortable but not extreme…I’m not sure that I’d be so keen to return to the deepest South again, certainly not anyplace where urban snow and frost would be regular occurrences…then maybe, I’m just over urban…?

4. What do you buy every time you walk into the grocery store, no matter what?

I always stock up on dairy: milk, butter and marg…if we don’t it it now it can always wait it the freezer til it’s time comes…

5. If you see a spider/bug in the house, are you brave enough to kill it, or do you call for your other half?

I’d prefer that someone else deal with it, but can general wind up enough backbone to deal with it myself…I spent enough time in South East Asia sharing space with greeblies to want to still do it now…
